Shawnee State University will be holding two events this week in recognition of Veterans Day. All the proceeds from the events are going to SSU’s Military and Veteran Services office.
Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts, King Calaway will be performing songs surrounding Veterans Day. The “kick-off concert” is open to everyone, and tickets can be bought at the box office for $30 for the lower tier and $35 for the upper tier.
Veterans who want to attend can get tickets through Brian Caudill, SSU’s veteran service coordinator, by emailing [email protected]. Caudill’s office is located in Veterans Lounge Room 205 in the Morris University Center.
Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Morris University Center, there will be an annual Veterans Recognition Day. Displays, including cannons and civil war attire, will be featured. A cannon will be fired, and there is a plan to have a Blackhawk helicopter land in the grass next to the MUC.
Speakers for the event will include Caudill, SSU interim President Eric Braun and Ohio Sen. Terry Johnson. The Portsmouth West High School Choir and American Legion Post 622/363 will also participate in the event.
Veterans will receive a free lunch during the event, and a ceremony will take place in the Morris University Center Ballroom.
SSU is considered a military-friendly school with many awards for being a top-rated school for veterans to attend. Veteran services offer many resources for veterans, such as private study areas, printing services, relaxation areas and academic assistance.
