Shawnee State University’s Honors Program is inviting students to enhance their academic journey through a selective application process. The program offers numerous benefits, including scholarships, personalized mentorship and priority registration, to create a more engaging and supportive learning environment.
To apply, prospective students must complete an application available on the university’s website. Submission requirements include two letters of reference and a sample of academic work, which will be submitted to a review committee for consideration. New students may qualify with an ACT score of 26 or higher, an SAT score of 1240 or above or a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher. Current and transfer students must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher to be eligible.
The Honors Program provides a unique educational experience, allowing students to benefit from a student-to-faculty ratio as low as 1:1. Each honors student is paired with a dedicated faculty mentor who offers guidance throughout the student’s academic career. Additionally, students receive up to $1,000 to support experiential learning opportunities, which can include study abroad programs, internships and research projects.
“This year, we are expanding,” said professor Pablo Salinas, who has directed the program since 2022. “We are planning on adding more activities. The president was enthusiastic about having a bigger, more vigorous program.”
Honors students enjoy access to a range of events, including concerts, movie screenings and trips to plays in nearby cities, all of which fosters a vibrant community and enriches students’ university experience. They can also participate in the Honors Symposium, where they present their research and findings.
Other benefits include the option to live in the Honors & Scholars Living Learning Community, co-curricular activities each semester, priority registration and the opportunity to wear special regalia during graduation.
Shawnee State’s Honors Program not only prepares students academically but also provides them with the tools and support needed to thrive both on and off campus, making it an appealing choice for high-achieving individuals looking to elevate their educational experience.
