Shawnee State University is encouraging students to enhance their global awareness and cultural understanding by pursuing a minor in Spanish. The program, designed to improve students’ speaking, reading, writing and cultural skills in the language, offers participants an opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and prepare for a world that is increasingly interconnected.
The Spanish minor consists of 21 credit hours, including foundational and advanced courses. Students are required to complete introductory courses in Spanish, such as Elementary Spanish I and II (SPAN 1111 and 1112) and Intermediate Spanish I and II (SPAN 2211 and 2212). Advanced coursework includes Composition and Conversation (SPAN 3311), Literature of the Americas (ENGL 3340) and Hispanic Women in Contemporary Film and Literature (ENGL 3377).
Students interested in declaring the minor are encouraged to consult their academic adviser, who can help them integrate the minor into their overall academic plan. The minor is open to anyone willing to embrace the challenge of learning a new language and expanding their cultural horizons.
“All you need is the spirit and the will to increase your global awareness,” said Pablo Salinas, professor of English and humanities at Shawnee State. “This minor helps students go beyond the bubble of their everyday lives. Many of our students who start this journey don’t stop — they begin traveling and experiencing the world in new ways.”
One of the standout features of the Spanish minor is the opportunity for international travel. Shawnee State offers various opportunities for students to travel abroad, often combining academic learning with immersive cultural experiences. In some cases, travel costs are partially or fully covered, providing students with an invaluable chance to explore Spanish-speaking countries firsthand. These trips allow students to apply their language skills in real-world settings while experiencing the rich diversity of Hispanic cultures.
For students pursuing careers in international relations, education, health care, business or any field that involves cross-cultural communication, the Spanish minor provides a competitive edge. Not only does it strengthen linguistic abilities, but it also fosters a deeper understanding of Hispanic literature, film and societal issues, making students more well-rounded and globally minded professionals.
“Students gain more than just language skills,” Salinas added. “They gain the ability to connect with people from different backgrounds, understand different perspectives and see the world through a new lens.”
The benefits of the Spanish minor extend beyond the classroom. Many students report that learning a second language has expanded their career opportunitie. The minor also helps students develop critical thinking skills, cultural empathy and adaptability—traits that are highly valued in today’s globalized job market.
Shawnee State’s Spanish minor is an excellent option for students looking to make the most of their college education by gaining practical language skills and cultural insights. Whether students are interested in exploring international travel or broadening their academic horizons, the program offers a unique combination of education, culture and adventure.
