As the semester progresses, students have flocked to the Student Success Center (SSC) for various reasons. Since March of this year, success coaches Erin Rice and Julie Buckler have been providing essential help to students who struggle in any area. With exams looming over the horizon, Rice was eager to spread the word about the new program. Students from all majors can reach out for help; Rice and Buckler said that they receive visits from over 40 students each per week.
When asked about what kind of advice she would give to students in need of assistance, Rice said that she and Buckler often help students to learn test-taking and reading strategies, alleviate test anxiety and learn time-management skills. Rice stated that the main goal of the program is to get at the root of the problem to see what causes the issues students are facing.
While Rice and Buckler also meet with students on academic probation, they would prefer to meet people before their grades reach that stage. Students can schedule a meeting on the MySSU home page through the success coaching link, or at the SSC. The academic coaching program offers multiple ways to meet; students have the option to meet with their coach in person, over a Microsoft Teams meeting or simply through email.
Rice also wanted to advertise the various events planned by the Success Center this semester: the Eat Your Frog Midterm Event 3-7 p.m. Oct. 9, Financial Literacy Help Day 2-5 p.m. Nov. 13 and the Eat Your Frog Finals Event 3-7 p.m. Nov. 21. Success coaching is available in the SSC from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
