At SSU, student-run organizations typically strive to build an accepting community. However, few focus on providing a safe space specifically for queer individuals. In the Sexuality and Gender Acceptance (SAGA) organization, this is its top priority. While it primarily focuses on those in the LGBTQIA+ community, anyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, is encouraged to join, including those who may still be “in the closet.” SAGA reinforces this commitment by requiring all members to keep each other’s identities confidential for their comfort and safety.
With its focus on social engagement, SAGA offers a variety of activities for its members during meetings, such as karaoke, board games, coloring and others. Additionally, the organization plans to host a drag show in the near future for anyone on campus to participate in, regardless of their membership status. Once a date and location are finalized, flyers will be distributed around campus with more details. SAGA typically meets once per week on Wednesdays or Fridays in the late afternoon, with specific dates and times announced in its Discord server, which has approximately 52 members.
SAGA strives to not only provide opportunities for socialization within a safe and warm environment, but also aims to educate its members through a series of “education events.” These events are planned to take place every Wednesday in October at 6 p.m. throughout the Fall 2024 semester. Updates on locations will be posted in SAGA’s Discord server. Previous meetings covered how to combat homophobia and transphobia and how to build an inclusive community. Upcoming meetings will explore topics such as queer history and life workshops that will create tools for queer individuals to thrive.
Anyone interested in becoming a part of SAGA’s warm and welcoming community may contact one of the board members at [email protected] or [email protected]. There are also flyers around campus with the organization’s social media and a QR code to join their Discord server directly. With its focus on fostering a warm and accepting community, SAGA is a fantastic space for anyone, queer or ally, to come together and forge long-lasting, supportive relationships.
