While in college, it can be tough to find a job that works around class schedules and allows students to maintain their mental health as well. Balancing college and work is a challenge faced by many students striving to achieve academic success while also trying to reach financial independence. Being able to commit to both classwork and a job requires effective time management and self-discipline, but, most importantly, it is about finding the job that works for you.
Katie Maggard, a current Shawnee State student, she said that “working while in college can be taxing to juggle. However, having a job that relates with my course of study helps make it easier. Having a consistent route and taking it day by day is what works best for me.”
Maggard was fortunate in being able to get work experience in her field while still in school, and she advises other students to try and do the same. Regardless of a student’s major, being able to work in a place similar to where you plan on working after college is great field experience to list on a résumé. Finding a job that is enjoyable and flexible results in students being content while also maintaining academic and financial success.
When registering and planning for classes, students should be sure to create a detailed schedule that organizes specific time blocks for classes, along with ample study time and homework time. Once a student has created an academic plan, they can then begin figuring out what available jobs offer flexible hours. After negotiating a schedule with an employer, students can then use a weekly planner to block out days and times spent in class, studying and at their job. Lots of students struggle to find a balance that works for them, but there are always local businesses looking to hire responsible college students.
A great job option for Shawnee State students is working on campus. Every year, emails are sent out to students listing available jobs on campus. If you are working in the same place that you take classes, you limit your commute time from class to work, and you could even hang out in the library to study and do homework before or after classes or your shift.
