Recently at SSU, the talk of campus has been the upcoming election. While this can be a tense time in our culture no matter which side of the political spectrum you fall on, it is very important to get out and vote. Not only is it important to exercise your rights this coming November, it is also very important that you understand the impact of your vote.
In just the past month, two clubs have formed here at Shawnee State: the Shawnee State Republican Club, and Young Democrats of Shawnee State University. Both clubs are trying to fill what seemed like a political void through activism, education and community service.
Riley Galloway, a junior at SSU and vice president of the Young Democrats, has taken on her new role despite a hectic schedule that includes 18 credit hours of coursework (including a teaching placement in the field), two jobs, and efforts to sell her artwork at local markets.
“I’ve always been involved with politics, especially when it comes to human rights, integrity and transparency, because not only does it affect you, but it affects all those around you,” she said. “… As a club leader, artist and student, I find it to be my purpose to encourage others to do the same. Help, pursue and improve the community around you, no matter how big or small.”
Since forming in September, Galloway said that the club has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time.
“As vice president, I have brought in local and state candidates, spoke at the Scioto County Democratic Banquet and have informed members of local, state and federal issues,” she said. “But like democracy, it’s not just me. It’s my whole team and everyone that’s part of the club.”
As this is being written, the club has managed to bring to campus U.S. congressional candidate Samantha Meadows’ campaign, as well as candidate for Ohio House District 90, Kate Nunnelley.
It is an exciting time for SSU students. The opportunity to get more involved with these clubs and learn how you can better impact your government on a local and federal level is an amazing one that is being led by hardworking student leaders.
