As college students navigate through their busy schedules and various stressors, finding opportunities to unwind and socialize is essential. By joining the Shawnee State Pool Club (pocket billiards, not to be confused with swimming pools), students can enter a calm, inviting environment which allows them to do just that. The club strives to be a space where students can socialize, meet new people and learn the basics of pool or improve their existing skills.
Additionally, for students interested in other tabletop games such as air hockey or table tennis, the club’s president, Emma Stevens, noted, “There’s a bunch of other activities people can do while we’re playing pool, but it’s mainly teaching people how to play and also just having a fun time with it.”
The Shawnee State Pool Club meets regularly in the recreation center in Morris University Center. While the dates and times of meetings may vary, they typically run from 6 to 9 p.m. Regular schedule updates are posted in the club’s Discord server. Currently, the club has approximately 10 members, which is the perfect size to ensure all members get plenty of time to play rather than idly waiting for their turn. Students interested in joining the Shawnee State Pool Club may contact the club’s board through SSU’s Presence page or by directly emailing Stevens.
When asked about the club’s future plans, Stevens expressed her hopes to acquire additional, higher-quality equipment. Just last year, the club had to work with a broken pool table and a limited number of cues, some of which were also damaged.
“I just want to make sure it stays clean and make sure that we always have the supplies to actually play pool,” Stevens said. So, whether students wish to enjoy a game of pool, meet new people or simply learn the basics, everyone is welcome.
