Adversity is nothing new to Dige Savage, a junior football player at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky. Despite being out for the season due to a knee injury, he is using the minor setback as a major comeback and is taking this chance to improve his relationship with God while finding strength and value in his faith.
“I became a lot closer to God with my knee injury,” Savage said. “I felt like I had a lot more alone time with Him since I haven’t been very busy. Because of that, I’ve been able to pray more, and my faith has definitely grown.”
Many may think the injury is unlucky, but it has changed Savage’s outlook.
“I feel like the injury was a blessing in disguise because I got to slow down and focus on the good parts of my life,” he said.
Savage has learned the importance of balance and preparation through his years as a student-athlete. He makes it a priority to set aside time every day for prayer and a Bible study to keep his faith at the center of his life with his busy schedule of school and athletics. He believes that this routine has been important in keeping his mental health in check and maintaining success in school.
Savage has sustained his motivation throughout the recovery process with verses from the Bible such as John 13:7 and Psalms 27:1.
“John 13:7 shows me that whatever happens is going to elevate me and allow me to grow,” he said. “Psalms 27:1 reminds me not to fear because everything is happening for a reason.”
Savage recommends that other student-athletes who have to balance their faith with the responsibilities of academics and athletics put their faith first and make time for God. He claims that putting one’s faith at the center of one’s life will positively affect mental health and help one through any challenge.
Despite having his season end early, Savage is sure that this experience will allow him to grow and become a better person on and off the field.
