On Shawnee State’s campus, there are several different options for any student to gather for ministry. Each week four separate groups — Athletes in Action, Delight, Cru and Illuminate — meet to share the word of the Lord and worship in a community of individuals with a shared belief. While each group is welcoming to all, each one has a specialization.
Delight Ministry is a women-centered organization that builds their community through vulnerability and accountability with each other. Outreach coordinator Emma Koch discussed Delight and how it has grown her faith.
“Delight is a community of Christian girls on our college campus,” Koch stated. “They were able to hold me accountable for my actions, helped guide me back to the Lord. That’s my favorite part of Delight is that we are a community. We get to talk to each other and be that support system that a lot of us don’t have.”
Cru Ministries and Athletes in Action are linked together. Both groups hold the same core beliefs of building the community of Christ through the sharing of the Gospel out in other communities. Athletes in Action acts as an extension of Cru that focuses on athletes on campuses. McKenzie Harman attends this campus branch of campus ministry and shared her experience.
“It is a group that builds the community through conversations with each other and others,” Harman said. “I mainly attend Athletes in Action. We are a group of athletes that are able to share their experiences in their sports and how that can relate to the Bible.”
Illuminate is a coed group that focuses on group worship and lessons brought through different members each week. Courtney Corvin attends Illuminate each week and discussed the importance of it to her life.
“Illuminate is student-led and connects so many believers on campus with worship, prayer and fellowship,” Corvin said. “It has been a big part of my walk as a believer in college. I’ve met so many friends that I will have for life in this ministry. Coming to Shawnee, I was away from my home where I grew up in church, and when I got to campus. Illuminate is one of the reasons I have grown so much in my faith.”
Students can enjoy time together during the weekly meetings of each group or they can show up the Intermission building Monday through Thursday anytime between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
