When NCAA Division II junior transfer Theo Blackett decided to leave Concord University, he knew he wanted a fresh start, one that would allow him to reach his full potential on the basketball court. Now at Shawnee State University, the Toronto native is ready to embrace a new beginning and to connect with a completely new team. Blackett’s path to Shawnee was driven by a desire for personal growth, winning, and a fresh start to the game he loves.
For Blackett, the decision to transfer wasn’t just about him trying to find playing time somewhere. It was more about being a part of a program that matched his wants and values and aspirations.
“I feel like Shawnee was the place for me because of the coaching staff and what they have done in the past by winning and being a top program in the country,” he explained. “I thought it would be good for me to be in a winning environment with good people around me.”
Shawnee State’s track record of making national tournament appearances and winning a national title in 2021 was a big factor in his decision. Coach Michael Hunter’s national championships at other schools and the all-around success of SSU’s athletic department made the team feel like the right fit for Blackett. He saw the move as a chance to surround himself with good people who would push him to improve and bring the best out of him as a teammate, athlete and person.
The 6-foot point guard is known for his ability to score from all three levels – the perimeter, mid-range and right at the rim. Blackett’s offensive versatility and playmaking ability adds depth and another dimension to the Bears squad.
This season, Blackett is focused on building lifelong relationships with his teammates and coaches, understanding that trust and chemistry are crucial to the team’s success. His decision to transfer came with many nonnegotiables, including a need for a team that had a culture and that emphasized unity and togetherness. At Shawnee State, he has found a program and environment that represents that. As the Bears are still trying to find their identity as a team, Hunter has done a good job at instilling the culture he wanted for his program, and Theo Blackett is a top representative of that culture. Blackett is excited to make the most of his new role with the increased opportunities that Shawnee offers.
Looking ahead, Blackett is clear about what he wants to accomplish this season and over his remaining years at Shawnee. His personal and team goals reflect a straightforward but strong commitment.
“Honestly, I just want to win games and get better at basketball,” he said.
This approach shows his work ethic and dedication to the game. While wins and losses are a major part of any season, Blackett’s viewpoint shows a deeper understanding and desire to improve each day, finding growth in all the challenges along the way.
As a new season begins, Blackett’s journey will be one to watch. His teammates rave about how long and late Blackett is in the gym each day. His dedication to the team, focus on developing relationships and his desire to win make him a valuable addition to Shawnee State’s program. For now, he’s focused on lacing up and giving his all to the Bears, game after game.
At Shawnee State, he has found exactly what he wanted: “being in a winning environment with good people around me.”
