Shawnee State University’s teacher education program offers a unique and immersive experience for aspiring educators, designed to provide extensive field experience and develop qualities essential for successful teaching careers.
Professor Jodi Dunham, who has been a faculty member in the program for a decade, describes it as “an exceptional opportunity” for students to gain practical experience early in their education journey. Dunham is involved in many courses in the program, including graduate studies within Shawnee State’s School of Education. She emphasizes that students start field placements in their very first class. This early immersion, though challenging, helps students quickly determine their passion and preferred grade level.
“Each year, our students participate in field placements,” Dunham explained. “By their senior year, students complete a clinical model that includes both methods courses and full-time student teaching. Altogether, they accrue over 600 hours in classrooms, working closely with professionals and gaining invaluable experience.”
The program seeks students with strong academic skills, dedication to teaching and a collaborative spirit.
“Being open to constructive criticism is key,” Dunham said, highlighting the program’s emphasis on teamwork and continuous growth.
Dunham acknowledges the challenges teachers face today but encourages students with a calling for education to pursue it despite societal pressures. “Teaching is an incredibly rewarding profession,” she said. “Don’t let anyone deter you from this path if it’s truly what you’re passionate about.”
Shawnee State University’s teacher education program prepares its students not only through rigorous coursework but with practical, in-classroom experience that ensures they are ready to lead their own classrooms upon graduation. With countless other professors like Dunham, Shawnee State’s teacher education program sets its students up for success.
