For the first time in school district history, Minford High School soccer teams have made it to the final four in the state of Ohio. Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams advanced to the semifinals.
On Tuesday, the Lady Falcons went up against Madeira in Centerville, resulting in a 4-1 loss. Their goal was scored by Maggie Risner (midfielder). The women’s team ranks 53rd overall in state and are No. 4 in Division V for the year.
The men’s team advanced to next week’s state final with a 4-0 win over Central Christian at Big Walnut High School in Sunbury.
Myles Montgomery (forward) scored the team’s two goals in the first half. In the second half, Peyton Caudill (forward and midfielder) scored with an assist by Gavin Downey (midfielder). In less than 40 seconds after the third goal, Montgomery scored the team’s fourth and final goal, resulting in a hat trick for the senior.
Montgomery has scored 39 goals and 25 assists over the course of his senior season. Throughout his soccer career, he has made 94 goals and 60 assists. Both his single-season and career assist totals hold school records.
“Honestly, I was a little bit nervous coming in,” said Montgomery. “I know it was a big game; we’ve never been here before. But I was really just excited, and I knew our community would be behind us. It was just awesome. There were a lot of people there to support us. And I just want to thank the Lord for getting us here.”
On Monday, the men’s team will play at the Historic Columbus Crew Stadium at 4 p.m. They will be up against Summit Country Day, a team that has won six state championships—the most recent of which being in 2018.
The Mighty Minford Falcons currently rank No. 2 in Division V, No. 41 in Ohio and No. 374 in the nation. Minford is now the first school in the Southeast District to win a state tournament soccer game.
“I’m extremely proud of them,” said head coach Jacob Hackworth. “Regardless of what happens Monday, they’re champions.”
