Shawnee State University strives to create a welcoming, inclusive campus for all students, no matter who they are. One way they accomplish this is through Student Affairs, which is run by dean of students Jeff Hamilton.
“We want to provide students with the opportunities to engage outside of class and learn skills,” Hamilton explained. “Student Affairs utilizes our campus to get students involved, make students feel connected to SSU and increase enjoyable and educational opportunities for everyone.”
Through events on campus and around Portsmouth, Hamilton hopes to bring more life to the area and create well-rounded students with skills such as leadership and teamwork.
Student Affairs holds many events throughout the semester. For those who remain on campus for Thanksgiving, there will be a “Friendsgiving” held Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. in the University Center ballroom. At the Kricker Innovation Hub, events such as the Bearcade and Coffee at the Kricker are held. The Bearcade occurs one Sunday every month at noon, and Coffee at the Kricker occurs every Monday at 8 a.m., featuring a different guest speaker each week.
Other events include Bingo Night, finals prep events and an upcoming grab-and-go Christmas tree and ornament event in the University Center lobby. Students can decorate their own tree on Nov 19 at 11 p.m.
For students interested in keeping up with Student Affairs and its events, the SSU student life Facebook page is the best source of information. Students can also talk to Marlita Cadogan, the interim director of student life, or Josie Tackett, the interim assistant director of student life, in room 221 of the University Center.
