Portsmouth, Ohio, is a town that has faced its share of struggles, but it is also the inspiration for a heartwarming holiday story that is deeper than one might think. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, a story created by Portsmouth native Barbara Robinson, mixes small-town dynamics with themes of compassion, redemption and community that everyone can relate to.
Giving hope
The movie, which was based on Robinson’s book, offers a powerful message that success and talent can come from even the most overlooked places.
“We always hear about how this area is voted worst at everything, but this shows that talent and success can be grown and cultivated anywhere, even here in southern Ohio,” said Kendra Savino, a local educator. This story can give hope to many, proving that small-town roots cannot stop someone from achieving big things.
The film may not directly show its Portsmouth background, but it has the power to subtly change how people view the area. The story’s broader themes are an example to the area’s hidden talent and perseverance, whether viewers are aware that it is about our area or not.
A teacher’s perspective: The modern Herdmans
The film’s representation of the Herdmans shows rough, misunderstood children who end up being unexpected stars of the town’s annual Christmas pageant. As a teacher, Savino sees connections between some of her students and the Herdmans.
“I think there are way more Herdmans around today,” she said, pointing out the fact that many kids continue to face problems that cause them to be misunderstood or ignored, even though problems in the modern world may not seem the exact same.
Savino loved the story’s message about building relationships and recognizing the value in each individual. “It’s great to help out and give supplies, clothes, food, etc., but the biggest impact comes from the relationships and taking the time to find their value and helping them see it, too.”
Lessons for the community
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a reminder to viewers of the importance of compassion and patience in an environment where it’s easy for people to quit trying for problematic kids or struggling families. The mother’s effort to connect to the Herdmans and see what they are worth is an important wake-up call for parents, teachers, and community members. As Savino said, “It was great to see someone fighting for the Herdmans and overcoming their prejudices.”
The main point of the movie is clear: Regardless of a number of issues, southern Ohio has undeniable potential, just like the Herdmans. Even the most unlikely people—or towns—can shock the world with their talent if they have a little compassion and determination.
In addition to being a great movie, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a reminder of what Portsmouth and its people can do when they love and support one another. I truly believe everyone should see this film and take something away from its story, especially those in our community.
