Saturday, Nov. 16, the SSU bowling teams competed in their final conference tournament until the new year. While bowling on very tough lane conditions, they battled their way through the day, and all teams still had a strong weekend.
‘The men’s varsity team finished fourth in a field of 17 teams. It was the team’s highest finish in regular season OBC play in program history. The Bears finished with an average of 201 pinfall per singles game. Leading the way was senior Sam Clay, once again, with an 880 series, only 20 pins out of the top five and a single pin ahead of Evan Thro from Muskingum University. Clay took seventh place with sophomore Blake Landers rounding out the top 10 with an 867 total. The men’s varsity team also shot an event-high 279 Baker game.
The men’s junior varsity team took home a sixth-place finish after a strong set of singles games and facing tough conditions in the Baker sets. Sophomore Andy Schoener had a total 734 for 13th place with a high game of 256.
The varsity women finished sixth in a 16-team group. Senior Olyvia Bittner finished 15th with a total of 717 followed by freshman Onesti Evans in 16th place and a total of 714.
The women’s junior varsity team left the event with a third-place finish in a field of six teams.
“It was another good weekend for all teams,” head coach Bryan Sturgell said. “Men’s varsity with a nice fourth-place finish, highest finish in a regular season OBC Conference event, event-high 279 Baker game, and a solid finish from start to finish. Men’s JV came out strong, leading after game one. Ran into some transition but had a nice Baker set. Women’s varsity with a nice top-10 again and was consistent all day. Women’s JV with a nice top-three finish. Overall, the effort was there, and that is all we ask for from our teams. Now we have a couple weeks off to heal and rest up and then back at it in Fort Wayne for an event we should make a run at.”
