Next semester, Shawnee State University will be offering a course in podcasting. This is the first time this communication elective will be taught, and the communication faculty plan to offer it every other spring moving forward. Christy Zempter, assistant professor of communication, will be the class instructor, and students will also enroll in an audio practicum taught by College of Arts and Sciences interim dean Michael Barnhart to record and edit their podcasts.
As much as it may be expected, the students registered for the class cannot wait to get started. With the way the world is moving, everything is in media, and media is always moving. This is why it is ever so important for students focusing on media-driven fields to get acquainted with as many facets of media as possible.
In podcasting, students will not only have the opportunity to express their own interests in the classroom, but they will also learn about the process of audio production. Being a communication major myself, this opportunity is something I am very much looking forward to, but don’t just take it from me. My classmate Brendan Major also had nothing but good things to say about the upcoming semester.
“I’m really excited for the podcasting class,” he said. “I’ve always had an interest in the subject, and I think it’ll be a fun challenge to work with the sound design and the editing side of things as well. I know Dr. Zempter will help us out plenty, as well as Dean Barnhart. It’s definitely going to be a fun time!”
It is no stretch to say that the podcasts that come from this class will be worth listening to.
