With the communication major at Shawnee being introduced very recently, the excitement for the program has been ramping up consistently. This program is home to a group of students who have some lofty aspirations and are building the skills to attain them. Among the current communication majors, you can find students who want to do sports broadcasting, script writing, news reporting and much more.
So, while the transition from college to a career can be challenging for anyone, this program gives students the opportunities they need to succeed in their select fields. Many classes in the communication program feature hands-on learning opportunities such as the development of a strategic communication plan, implementation of a social media management plan, creation of a podcast and the opportunity to publish news stories in the Chronicle. As a student in this major, I am very fortunate for everything I have been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. So, if I had had all of these opportunities after joining the program in my sophomore year, I was interested to get the perspective of one of my classmates, Adrienne Whitley, who has been in the program from the start of her college career.
Whitley has become a popular face at Shawnee as a cheerleader, Chronicle staff writer and content creator for the social media pages of the university.
“As a communication major, my coursework and time at Shawnee has been an incredible experience so far,” Whitley said. “The classes have provided me with a diverse range of skills I will use in my future endeavors.”
Whitley also touched on how the program is going to help her with her future.
“I aspire to be a news anchor someday and be a recognizable positive role model, and thanks to my professors and classmates, my dream is slowly but surely becoming reality. Although I am only a sophomore, I already feel more confident in my communicative skills and am more than ready to learn more in the years to come.”
The future is bright for the communication majors of Shawnee State. Next thing you know these students may just be dominating the media landscape, so keep an eye out for communication majors like Whitley because you never know when they will turn their ambitions into a reality.
