Being uncomfortable is not fun to say the least. If someone has ever been watched or followed, they are aware of the feeling that lingers over them like a heavy coat. That coat makes that person feel the weight of anxiety, anticipation, self-consciousness and fear, especially if they are somewhere with little to no people around. Most of us know this feeling, we have all been there. Being scared and on high alert is not a fun feeling. One cannot think clearly and will likely act out of fear from the adrenaline and may not make the best decisions in the situation.
College campuses are generally decently guarded, depending on the school itself. At Shawnee State University, we have a 24-hour police and security presence on campus. SSU officers patrol campus on foot and by car all throughout the day every day. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) provides assistance for our local law enforcement and first responders. To prevent a bad situation and to maintain safety, it is deemed wise to keep cars locked at all times, keep important valuables at home, not wear them, be aware and alert at all times and report any suspicious activity immediately. Trust your instincts and tell someone your concerns. Several flyers for your safety that provide phone numbers can be found posted on the cork boards in Massie Hall that could easily be added to your contact list. Never walk alone at night; stay in groups. Always make sure someone you trust has your location at all times while you are out, and check in with people. Feel free to visit the SSU page, go to “Campus Life.” Click “Campus Police and Public Safety at Shawnee State.” There are several articles to read and more tips on how to prevent danger. Stay safe out there.
