PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Shawnee State University women’s basketball team is ranked No. 23 in the latest NAIA national poll, marking a strong start to the season for the Bears.
Senior guard Miyoshi Ellis said this year’s team combines individual talent with strong teamwork both on and off the court.
“This team is very talented individually but also works hard every day and is able to put all our talents together to be a great team,” Ellis said. “We are also a close-knit team off the court.”
Ellis also explained that being nationally ranked brings added pressure but also motivates the team to improve.

“It puts more of a target on our backs to grind every day to prove that we are what they say and better,” she said.
Looking ahead, Ellis said she is excited for tough matchups against other ranked teams and familiar conference opponents.
“We made a statement last year, but not a big enough one, so I can’t wait for that,” she said.
The Bears return several key players from last season and they hope to build on their national recognition as they open their campaign Saturday, Nov. 1, at the University of Northwestern Ohio. The team is scheduled to host Wilberforce University at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center in the home opener.
