PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Shawnee State University’s women’s basketball team defeated Simmons College (Ky.) on Wednesday, winning 81-42 to remain undefeated at home. Senior Emily Maynard scored in double digits, relying on her 3-point shooting and strong team support.

“What worked for me best was definitely my shooting ability from the 3-point line,” Maynard said. “My teammates made it easy as they found me well when I was open and realized that I was shooting well, so they tried to get me the ball as much as they could.”
Maynard spoke about a key moment after halftime.
“Our coach gave us a lot of pointers and feedback in the locker room,” she said. “This really helped us get back into our groove and helped us extend our lead in the second half.”
The Bears’ balanced scoring also featured Ra’Khiya Prince and Miyoshi Ellis in double figures. Kyla Torok contributed 13 rebounds, helping Shawnee State control the boards on the offensive and defensive end. The team held Simmons to 42 points and forced multiple turnovers.
The home win keeps Shawnee State undefeated in the Waller Gymnasium.
“It feels great; it makes us really want to keep our streak going all season, which is our goal,” Maynard stated. She added that senior leadership had been crucial as the seniors are always working hard on and off the court with underclass teammates to help them understand the defensive rotation that needs to happen for it to work. She explained that they are getting better every day at this.
With this win, Shawnee State continues to assert themselves as a dominant team at home this season.
