Calling all Shawnee men! Have you ever wanted to participate in pageantry? Ladies, have you ever wanted to watch a male pageant? Well now’s your chance!

Thanks to the ladies of Delta Phi Epsilon, Shawnee State University can welcome back the Deepher Dude Men’s Pageant! DPhiE sister, Aubrey Boland shared everything we need to know about the upcoming pageant. The Deepher Dudes will go through four phases of competition: an opening dance routine; spirit wear to show off their SSU gear; talent (don’t worry, you don’t have to be an opera singer); and formal attire with an onstage question. 

Why is DPhiE hosting this event and how long has this pageant been going on? 

Boland shared that “DPhiE last hosted Deepher Dude back in 2016 to raise money for their philanthropy ANAD (Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders).” Within all styles of Greek Life the sorority or fraternity is represented by a group or organization, with the goal in mind of raising money for that group or organization. In 2016 Deepher Dude was a big hit and it is being brought back this year! For the 2021 Deepher Dude event Boland said “We’re raising money for our other philanthropy which is Cystic Fibrosis (CF).” With a wonderful organization at the forefront of this pageant Boland shared the beginning process with what will be the next steps for Deepher Dude. She shares that “after we receive applications, we’ll begin tabling in the UC (University Center) where people can donate money to their favorite contestant, in hopes that they win the title of Mr. Money Bags. All proceeds from that will be donated to CF.” 

Who are the judges of the pageant? 

Staff and students alike will be judging the pageant to get the entire campus involved. Boland shared that “we will have judges from all over campus, from Department of Public Safety Officers to Deans and several others.” Those special judges will have their hands full with a tough decision at the end of the Deepher Dude Pageant. 

Application Process

Keep your eyes peeled! All over campus there are signs posted for the Deepher Dude Pageant. Students who want to sign up can scan the QR code on the bottom of the poster to fill out the application. The application consists of questions like, your hometown, major, year at Shawnee, and many more so the DPhiE girls can get to know you! This pageant needs a minimum of eight contestants and applications will be accepted through NEXT Wednesday! 

Why should students get involved? Participating or watching! 

Boland expresses that this event is supposed to be “funny, lighthearted, and entertaining! All students will enjoy watching it and we encourage everyone to come, especially since it’s for a good cause.” Boland said there will also be prizes to be given away. There is nothing better than going and cheering for fellow students while they rock the stage, and as a contestant, there is no better feeling than a full crowd cheering for you!
