Located on Shawnee State University’s campus, Clark Memorial Library is a place where students can use library resources and receive help for various issues they may have.
Suzanne Johnson-Varney, the current library director and 14-year employee, encourages students to come to the library and use the resources available to them there.
“The Clark Memorial Library works hard to provide all the resources that students need to achieve their academic goals,” she said. “We encourage people to come in and use our library.”
The library contains over two dozen computers, free printing, free scanning and 11 study rooms that students can reserve. Also located to the left of the library’s main entrance is the Bear Cave.
The Bear Cave is a secure place for students to use when the library itself is not open. With several computers and its own free printing, the Bear Cave is open 24 hours and only requires an SSU ID to get access.
The library can help with problems like authentication logins, accessing materials from other libraries, models for anatomy students and checking out electronic devices such as headsets or laptops.
Along with basic aid, more niche resources are available for students with specific majors.
For education students, there is the graphics lab with free lamination; for history students, there are Portsmouth newspapers dating as far back as the 1800s available to see by appointment; and for anatomy students, there is the anatomized table that can be used under supervision.
Currently, the CML hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. According to Johnson-Varney, the library is currently in the process of hiring more workers so that the library can start staying open until 11 p.m.
Anyone who has questions for a librarian but is unable to physically go to the library can get help through an online chat session. To access this chat, visit the Clark Memorial Library webpage and click the “chat now” button.
During open hours, there is always at least one student worker located at the main desk to check out items and assist students in any way possible.
Students, faculty and staff also can reach the Clark Memorial Library director via email at [email protected] or by phone at 740-351-3197.
