Haskins House Records is more than just a record store. The shop, located at 534 2nd St. in Portsmouth, is owner Travis Haskins’ way to celebrate his father’s legacy. Inspired by family and the community’s love for art and music, Haskins opened the store after father passed away and left behind his record collection.

“My father lived and breathed art,” said Haskins. “Both creating and consuming it. Music, painting, poetry, literature, any form. When he passed away, he left behind a large collection of records as well as passing along his love for art. The family kept what we wanted for our personal collections, and we were still left with thousands. We started a small booth in an antique shop where my brother sold his artwork, and we put out a few crates of records.”

That small booth began almost 10 years ago, and it would expand into a record store, which is now open Mondays through Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. Now, Haskins House Records trades, buys and sells records. Haskins is grateful to his community for supporting his small business.

“It’s humbling to see a part of our father’s legacy being so important to such a diverse community of fellow art lovers,” he said. “I’m just lucky enough to get to work there.”

Camryn Pierson, Staff Writer
Camryn Pierson is a sophomore at Shawnee State University. She is majoring in AYA language arts education. She chose this major because she was inspired by her teachers throughout her junior high and high school career to love reading. The Secret History by Donna Tartt is one of Camryn’s favorite works of literature because of its critique of elitism and groupthink. She wishes to pass that love of reading on to her future students. As a part of Project BEAR, Camryn works with elementary students to provide literacy support. She will be going to Minford Elementary School to continue her passion of encouraging young minds to fall into the world of books. When asked about an important figure in her life, Camryn named her mom because of the love and support she provides. Camryn offers the following advice to other students: Make sure to stay on top of homework, get involved in college life and make sure to study.
