SSU offers variety of resources to students

Shawnee State University has many different campus resources available for students. SSU offers a wide variety of options and assistance with all aspects of college life and education for students in need.

The Student Success Center has many options for students to help with assignments and achieve better grades. They offer tutoring and writing assistance for students in need of help. The Writing Center offers in-person and online tutoring for writing projects. The center is open on the lower level of Clark Memorial Library (Room 120) 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, with closures 2-3 p.m. Tuesdays and 1-2 p.m. Fridays. Tutors are available online 4-7 p.m. Sundays. Students can email the center at [email protected] to schedule an appointment or get more information.

The Dayton duMeleau Math Success Center provides free in-person peer tutoring 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays in the Administration Building, Room 150. Online tutoring is also available through the week and on weekends via the Virtual Math CenterScheduling and information for the Math Success Center can be found at this link.

SSU’s Bear Necessities pantry is available for students who are in need of items ranging from school supplies to food and toiletries. The pantry is open in the Student Resource Hub 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“The Bear Necessities Pantry operates entirely on donations of non-perishable goods as well as monetary donations,” according to SSU’s website. “Monetary donations are accepted in the form of cash or a check made payable to Shawnee State University with Bear Necessities Pantry in the memo line. Donations can be dropped off in the Morris University Center, Room 221, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday.”

The university also provides career services for current students and SSU graduates alike. The Career Services office offers many resources, including helping build student portfolios, professional headshots and many more.

Internships and job search help are also offered by Career Services. The office uses the app Handshake to assist in finding the best fit for the student. Career Services can be found in room 134 of Massie Hall. The office is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

SSU also offers mental health counseling services in Hatcher Hall, next to the education building. Services are free for all students, but spaces are limited due to low staff numbers. For more information on how to access counseling support, students can visit this link.

Sandy Stevens is a Logan, Ohio, native who hopes to graduate from Shawnee State University in 2027 with a degree in English/humanities and a minor in communication. She appreciates the opportunities SSU offers while still having that small campus feel. Sandy's love for journalism began in high school when she was a writer and editor for the student newspaper for five years. She is drawn to the writing aspect of journalism, stating that she loves to put her thoughts to words and words to paper. Outside her studies, she wants to travel, especially to Europe. “It is one of the prettiest parts of the world,” Sandy said. She also enjoys art, spending time with her loved ones and watching her favorite TV shows. Her goal for this semester with the Chronicle is to create interesting articles as well as learning more about the rich history of this small community.
