SSU hiring students for orientation leader positions

Shawnee State University is looking for orientation leaders for the coming year. The application deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 7. Requirements are a 2.5 GPA or higher, a fall 2024 class schedule and overall good academic standing.

The job requires students to lead seven orientations from April to July. Each orientation day pays $120 with a free lunch, and orientation leaders receive Shawnee merchandise such as shirts, fanny packs and name tags.

Orientation leaders are required to work one orientation in April, one in May, three in June and two in July. Over the summer, housing is available for students who cannot commute. Each orientation session runs between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Leaders are free between orientation days to do other things; they only require training for those seven days.

Students who submit an application by 6 p.m. Nov. 7 will be invited to a group process day that involves team-building and social activities to see how applicants interact with others and develop social skills. A selection committee observes participants and, based on a checklist, makes recommendations on candidates for the next round of consideration.

Applicants selected by the committee will receive an email setting up an in-person, one-on-one interview before winter break. Between 15 and 20 orientation leaders will be hired for the coming year.

If chosen, leaders must receive training once a week from February to April. During the training, different departments, staff and faculty on campus will provide information and help students learn more. This will help students get to know the campus and faculty before helping incoming students. There will be no training during campus breaks and off periods.

“Being an orientation leader does open up networking and job opportunities for students,” said Brittany Bazler, assistant director of campus programs. “With all the training, campus offices like to hire orientation leaders because they know an extensive amount about campus.”

The application can be found at Shawnee State Orientation Leader and requires general information and poses a few questions about the reasons why students want to become orientation leaders. For more information, students can email Bazler at [email protected].
